Empower vulnerable women and mothers in Arusha, North Tanzania

Pays d’action: Tanzanie, Afrique
Type d’activité: Missions humanitaires, en faveur de femmes
The women and mothers in our projects come from difficult living conditions, which are characterized by domestic violence and stigmatization due to HIV/AIDS by Tanzanian society. We support the women with various initiatives so that they can find their way back to an independent and autonomous life.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

We work with three local projects in Arusha that specifically help women and young mothers to find an independent life. The women and mothers from our projects come from difficult living conditions , which are mainly characterized by poverty, domestic violence and stigmatization. Many of the women are HIV positive and thus experience exclusion from society, which puts an additional burden on their already difficult life situation.

You have the opportunity to actively support these projects according to your wishes and talents, and there are no limits to your creativity.
The working hours are usually from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. All projects are within walking distance or a short bus ride from the volunteer accommodation.
You can get involved in the different areas and support the women to live a self-determined life.

In the projects, the women have the opportunity to learn new skills such as tailoring, jewelry making, soap production, computer use or agriculture through different initiatives.
Many of the women had limited access to education during their childhood and adolescence, which is why they are taught business and health education in addition to English classes in the projects.
Some of the projects have also taken on the task of teaching schoolgirls sex education in order to strengthen their self-confidence and educate them. Sanitary pads are luxury products in Tanzania, which means that girls from poorer families often cannot come to school during their period. The projects aim to address this problem by producing and distributing reusable period products , such as washable pads, free of charge.

The main goal of this project is to give the women a chance to lead an independent and self-determined life. They can use the skills they have learned to feed their families and earn their own living.
