Volunteering in a kindergarten
In Tanzania, it is not uncommon for children to be taught reading, maths, and writing as early as kindergarten. This is usually done in a playful manner and forms the basis for their later school career.
In order to ensure that this knowledge base is established, most institutions need support due to a lack of staff. As a volunteer, you are therefore in high demand in this area.
We work with many different placement locations. Depending on your needs or preferences, you can choose between a non-profit or private kindergarten with preschool. In addition to childcare, the focus of your work in the kindergarten will also be on teaching. For example, you will teach the children basic English skills. The goal is to support the staff as much as possible.
Your everyday life in the project
Your exact working hours and tasks depend on your place of assignment. What is certain is that you will only ever work from Monday to Friday. Kindergartens are usually open from 7:30 a.m. until late afternoon. There is usually a short break in the morning and a longer lunch break, which you can spend with your colleagues.
Please note: In educational institutions in Tanzania, it is still customary to discipline students with a cane. You will not be teaching with a cane, of course, but you should be aware of this.
