Enseignement et éducation des enfants à Zanzibar

Many kindergartens and schools in Zanzibar often struggle with financial difficulties: Up to 70 children sit in one classroom, which makes it difficult for teachers and educators to address individual needs. Facilities and teaching materials are insufficient; the educational standard is relatively low. Although there are no school fees, parents of the children have to cover costs for notebooks, books, writing materials, and school uniforms, which is simply not possible for families with many children. Children are also needed to work in agriculture, for example. Therefore, many children simply do not attend school at all.

We can facilitate volunteer placements in various schools, kindergartens, and childcare facilities for children. All facilities have a great need for volunteers and would be happy to have your support!

Your tasks as a volunteer include (depending on the institution):

• You support the teachers in teaching and help children who need more care and attention in class.
• In Zanzibar, children learn letters and numbers already in kindergarten (e.g., through singing or clapping games). You can bring in your own ideas on how to make learning interactive and exciting.
• After a learning and acclimatization phase, you can also teach yourself, depending on your interests and abilities, e.g., English, Math, or Sports. As well as, for example, Geography, Sciences, Computer & Technology, Religion, Swahili, and Arabic.
• In the afternoons, you can offer play and leisure activities or homework help in some facilities. For example, foreign language lessons, a computer club, a book club, or a Pen Pal Club.

The role is unpaid, but it offers valuable experience for your personal and professional development.
