Volunteer work in after-school support in Romania

Pays d’action: Roumanie, Europe
Type d’activité: Missions humanitaires
In this social volunteering project, you will work in an after-school club in Transylvania. You will support and supervise kids in the afternoons after school, helping them with their studies and homework, playing games with them and supporting them in their development.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

Your tasks in the project

At this time, the younger children will already be there. You will help them with their homework or, if they have already finished, play games with them. Then the older children will arrive and start their homework. If necessary, you can also help them with their homework, but if not, they can simply join in the games and activities you have prepared once they have finished their homework.

The aim of the project is to help children find their place in society. They are not responsible for their situation, and through your volunteer work, you can help to compensate for this. The project aims to boost their self-confidence and teach them English.

A typical day

After lunch, you will head to your placement and arrive at the After School Club at around 1 p.m.

Between 5 and 6 p.m., the children go home, and you will also leave the project location and return to your accommodation.
You will work from Monday to Friday for approximately five to six hours, from 12 noon to 6 p.m., including travel time to and from the project location.

Your free time

Your project location is right in the city centre. Despite its central location, you don't need to worry about noise pollution, as the area is very quiet and peaceful. Conveniently, there are all kinds of shops, cafés and restaurants in the area around the volunteer apartment. There is also an ATM within walking distance. Also nice to know: many facilities have WiFi. As a cool extra, there is the ‘Game Hut’, a wilderness hut where you can hang out with the other volunteers and play games, for example.
Transylvania is, of course, extremely well known for the legend of Count Dracula, who is said to have lived in Bran Castle. You should consider taking a spooky tour through the vampire's walls – if you dare. An absolute must-see for any traveller to Romania is the Salina Turda, an underground salt mine museum that also houses an amusement park. After descending numerous steps, you take a lift all the way down. A science fiction feeling is guaranteed! A Batman episode was supposed to be filmed here, but couldn't be realised due to the unsuitable size of the Batmobile.
