Your possible workplaces and project goals

As a volunteer, you will be assigned to one of many kindergartens in Cape Town. On average, a kindergarten has space for between 70 and 240 children, depending on whether there is a preschool attached. As these facilities often suffer from staff shortages, your help is always welcome. You will support the staff in looking after the children and giving them attention. In addition, these facilities provide a safe place for the children, who often come from disadvantaged suburbs (townships) of Cape Town.

The main goal is to enrich the educational and care services offered in local kindergartens and give children the opportunity to develop in a healthy way.

Your tasks in the kindergarten in Cape Town

Your main tasks will include supporting the educators and local teachers in their daily activities. In the kindergarten, you will help look after the children, play with them, and feed the toddlers. In the preschool, you will assist the teachers with childcare and teaching, for example by teaching the children to count, spell, and tell the time. You may also be asked to help with craft activities.

During your assignment, you can give free rein to your creativity and organize your days with the children however you like. Whether you want to do crafts, play games, or sing— anything that brings variety to the children's lives will bring them joy!

The children will be delighted if you bring your own ideas and games with you as a volunteer!

Your working hours at the kindergarten
You will usually work from Monday to Friday, from morning until early afternoon. You will of course have a short break at lunchtime to eat something.
