In various areas of outdoor and ecotourism in Japan, volunteer deployments are possible:
In Toba, you will be active at the Ama women's visitor center. Ama are women who dive into the sea without diving equipment using millennia-old techniques to gather seafood in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The women are also considered the inventors of pearl cultivation. Their techniques and knowledge are a UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition to your work at the visitor center, where fresh seafood is also tasted, you will also accompany guided boat tours with a biological and cultural focus. In the summer months, visitors marvel at millions of sea fireflies (Vargula hilgendorfii) at night. The deployment in Ise-Shima National Park is possible in English.
Another deployment opportunity in Ise-Shima is at the Fisherman's Guesthouse, with various outdoor tours. At the Fisherman's Guesthouse, you will assist with fishing, help with aquaculture, and support tourists. For the outdoor tours, which include kayak tours, bicycle tours, and hikes, you will accompany the tours and assist with marketing and PR activities.
In Takayama in southern Japan, you can support a local tourism initiative in the preparation and execution of bicycle and hiking tours in English through rural Japan. Additionally, you will provide information to visitors at the reception in Takayama, assist with marketing tasks such as writing texts for the website, and participate in local community activities.
Finally, you can work in a traditional guesthouse (Ryokan) with a small water sports center in Shizuoka. You will support various water sports activities and assist in the Ryokan. This includes tasks such as cooking, serving, booking management, and preparing rooms. If you have no diving experience, you can take a free diving course at the beginning and then assist with diving.
The missions are unpaid, but they give you the unique opportunity to work in the Japanese countryside and gain unforgettable experiences.
