The school enrollment rate in Tanzania is 98%. However, not every child completes their education. Children from poorer backgrounds in particular often have no opportunity to attend or finish school. Many of them cannot afford the tuition fees for secondary schools or do not have the money needed for school uniforms.
Although many primary and secondary schools have been expanded in recent years, there is still a shortage of teachers and adequate materials. The schools are therefore very grateful for any help they can get.
Volunteering at a school
Your place of work will be a private or public school. Depending on where your support is needed, you will work in the city or in the countryside. You will be working in a preschool, elementary school, or secondary school. Your volunteer work will improve the quality of teaching and enable students to receive individual support. You should focus on teaching English to children and young people. You will mainly assist the local teachers and help in the classroom. Upon consultation, you can also focus on specific areas and teach subjects you feel confident in. It is important that you have previous experience in education or teaching.
Your free time in Zanzibar
Zanzibar offers beautiful beaches, fragrant spice plantations and the historic Stone Town – ideal for exploring and relaxing. A highlight is the group day trip to Nakupenda sandbank with swimming, a picnic and a campfire at sunset.
