About your volunteer work at an elementary school
As a volunteer, you will work either at a state or a private primary school. The implementing organization's facilities are located in Mtwara, Arusha and Dar es Salaam. Each school is equipped differently. However, they usually all have different classrooms and an outdoor area that is also used for teaching. Sometimes up to 500 children attend one school.
In addition to the basics such as reading, writing and arithmetic, there are also schools where geography and English are on the curriculum. Since there is usually a shortage of teachers, your support as a volunteer is very welcome.
Your tasks at a primary school
Your main task as a volunteer will be to support the teaching staff in the classroom. In a playful way, you will teach the children basic learning content, for example in math, English or geography. You will also supervise the children during lunch and breaks. Through your commitment, the students have the opportunity to be individually supported. You can also demonstrate alternative teaching methods to make the lessons more creative.
You can also get involved after class. Play or romp with the children. They are always happy when you come up with exciting games.
Your daily routine on site
Your working hours depend on your placement. However, you will always work from Monday to Friday. Classes at the schools usually start around 8 a.m. and end in the early afternoon. At some placements, food is served around noon. After that, the students either lie down for a while or do their homework with your support.
In your free time, you can explore the area around your place of work. For example, you can go on safari in the famous Serengeti or hike in the mountains near Iringa.
