Your assignment in Mtwara
The diving project in Mtwara, Tanzania, is run by two dedicated French diving instructors. Since 2003, the focus has been on marine conservation, with projects to educate and actively preserve coral reefs and endangered sea turtles. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of protecting intact underwater worlds and to implement concrete measures such as coral farms and mapping damaged reefs.
Your tasks in the project
This project focuses on active marine conservation, with a special focus on coral farming and the protection of sea turtles. You will learn how corals are cultivated, cared for and reimplanted, and you will help map underwater areas. Reef sites are monitored in collaboration with universities and researchers. At the same time, you will support the protection of sea turtles through patrols or educational work.
Your daily work
Three days a week you will be diving in the water, and two days you will be working on land or snorkelling. Your working day begins at 8:00 a.m. with a group meeting to discuss the day's goals and planned tasks. Afterwards, the equipment is prepared. Depending on the weather and the plan, the work can then take place in the water (from a boat or from the shore) or on land. Work usually ends around 2:00 p.m.
Your free time
Mtwara in southern Tanzania is a relaxed port city with palm trees, sandy beaches and friendly people. In your free time, you can go snorkelling, visit local markets or take trips to the nearby marine park. Our location offers many opportunities for socialising, with a bar, amphitheatre and music studio. A highlight is the boat trip to the islands and sandbanks.
