In Uganda, you can volunteer to support the education and empowerment of girls and women. Many lack basic knowledge about important topics like contraception, which can lead to difficult situations: 1 in 6 girls drops out of school due to pregnancy. Early marriage is also common, limiting their chances for a self-determined life. Your commitment as a volunteer can help improve this situation – either in an awareness-raising project or in the education sector. Both initiatives are run by non-profit organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life for girls and women in Uganda.
Volunteering in the awareness-raising project
This project focuses on topics such as gender equality, women's health, and family planning. You may work in schools or community centers, informing girls and women about pregnancy, health, and contraception. If you have prior experience, you can also help develop “Gender Training Toolkits” or support organizational tasks like website maintenance or creating an informational magazine.
Volunteering in the education sector
This initiative aims to improve access to education for girls, women, and marginalized groups such as people living with HIV/AIDS. You can assist in activities like wine production, tailoring training, or handicrafts. Proceeds from the products support a girls’ school, where you can also assist teachers in English lessons. New ideas and teaching methods are welcome. With experience, you can also contribute to art or music classes. The local football team is looking for a dedicated coach as well.
Your daily schedule depends on your area of assignment. Typically, you’ll work five days a week from 8 AM to 5 PM, with a hot meal provided during the lunch break.
