Based in a remote outpost deep in the heart of Namibia’s vast desert landscape

The towering sand dunes of Namibia are home to 25% of the world’s cheetah, most of whom still roam freely across the wilderness.

As a volunteer in this unforgettable landscape, you’ll see these amazing beasts in their natural habitat and come face to face with semi-wild cheetah in a rehabilitation centre.

Your time will be split across two locations. The first is a remote camp in the heart of the wild desert. Here, you’ll work alongside scientists who specialise in researching cheetah, leopard and brown hyena. Your role will be to help the project team study the predators’ movement and behaviour.

You’ll also have the chance to camp out in the desert overnight to see nocturnal brown hyena. Spending a night under the African sky is an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life. But if you’re thinking of travelling during Africa’s winter (June – August), please note the temperature can drop below zero!

The second location is a farm which rehabilitates injured predators. Here, you’ll have the chance to see semi-wild predators up close. Your role in the centre will be to help the team monitor and feed a group of cheetah that have been released into this safe, controlled environment.

During your placement, you’ll also have the chance to visit the largest sand dunes in the world: Sossusvlei and Deadvlei (these excursions are offered as an optional extra).

If you’re passionate about big cats, and want an adventure with lots of variety, this is the experience for you.

L’organisation de volontariat se présente

Since 1999, our organisation has empowered gap year travellers to work hands-on with Africa’s wildlife. As experts in conservation, we’ve helped thousands of volunteers gain skills for their university applications or future careers, all while creating gap year experiences that are anything but tame.

We’ve also supported those that are simply searching for a meaningful wildlife experience instead of the usual safari holiday. We do this by offering a variety of opportunities including being able to volunteer at wildlife care and rehabilitation centres to aid orphaned and injured animals; assist with wildlife conservation management in order to monitor priority species and contribute to vital research; and being able to live the life of an African wildlife vet while meeting the requirements for Extra Mural Studies (EMS) and Animal Husbandry Extra Mural Studies (AHEMS).

Together, we can create a brighter future for Africa’s wildlife.
