Location:
The landscape surrounding the project site is nothing short of breathtaking. Towering glaciers and deep-cut fjords meet wide, fertile farmland – a stunning contrast that captivates the eye and touches the soul. Endless roads stretch out before you, inviting you to take your time and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. And don’t forget to snap some unforgettable photos to take home with you! Not far from the project site, you’ll find picturesque fishing villages nestled between mountains and sea. Here, you can sample local products, chat with the friendly locals, and gain an authentic insight into Icelandic culture and traditions – a meaningful and enriching part of your international experience.
In this northern corner of Europe, nature remains largely untouched. Along the coast, a rich variety of marine life thrives: with a bit of luck, you might spot seals, dolphins, or even whales. Thousands of seabirds nest along the dramatic cliffs, and with some patience, you may even see elk roaming the nearby forests. Beyond the amazing fauna, Iceland is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Vast hiking trails, dramatic volcanoes, and icy glaciers await your exploration. And after a day spent in nature, be sure to take a dip in one of the country’s famous hot springs – a magical experience that soothes both body and mind.
A typical day:
As a rule, you will work 7 to 8 hours a day, including a lunch break. However, the hours may vary from day to day. Volunteers often only help out at the Red Cross during the first few days, which usually only takes 4 hours a day. The rest of the day can be spent exploring the city and getting used to your new surroundings. During the rest of the project, you may work more on some days, for example if there is a workshop or an excursion, and less on others. You may also have to work on weekends. In return, you will get two other days off during the week. From September to May, additional photography workshops are offered. These focus on capturing the beauty of nature and environmental issues in a creative and powerful way.
Excursions such as the “Golden Circle Tour,” a one-day tour of Iceland's breathtaking sights, are also included in the program.
