Your assignment location and the goals of your project work
Your assignment location is in the beautiful region of Axim. There is a wide variety of animal and plant species here, but they are severely endangered by environmental pollution and coastal erosion. In addition, waste disposal in Ghana is not particularly effective, which means that a lot of rubbish ends up in the sea and is eventually washed up on the beach.
The population of Ghana is largely unaware of the situation, but they feel the consequences. Erosion is a particular problem. Villages that used to be far enough away from the sea are now right on the coast and are sometimes swept away by the floods.
Sea turtles and fish populations are also threatened by severe pollution and overfishing. This situation is to be improved in part through the commitment of volunteers.
Your place of work is a beautiful beach resort in a safe oasis in the coastal region of Axim. The facility has been committed to environmental protection for over 25 years and is probably the largest resort of its kind in Ghana. Here you will carry out educational work and help to protect the region.
Your tasks in the recycling project in Ghana
Basically, you will collect trash during daily patrols on the beaches and note down where it came from. At night, you may also be asked to join the security team on patrol. Driftwood and bamboo are also collected and transported to a nearby carpentry workshop for processing.
In some months, trees and palm trees are planted to counteract sea erosion. Your help is also needed in educating the population.
Your daily work as a recycling volunteer
You will work approximately 30 to 40 hours per week. Most of the time you will work 5 days, but sometimes 6 days in part-time service. The exact working hours depend on the tides and the seasons. Lunch is usually from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Your free time in Axim
You are right next to a beautiful beach that is perfect for swimming or surfing. Nature lovers will be drawn to Kakum National Park, where they can take a spectacular walk through the treetops of the rainforest.
