In the immediate vicinity of the popular surfing and beach town of Muizenberg lies the Zandvlei nature reserve on the outskirts of Cape Town. Covering over 300 hectares, the reserve is home to numerous animal and plant species, including some endangered birds, amphibians and fish.
Our partner organisation is a not-for-profit organization that works with local and international volunteers in cooperation with the Cape Town City Council to protect the nature reserve and its surroundings.
As a volunteer in this project, you will accompany and support the local team members with their daily tasks and activities the reserve, such as maintaining the fences and paths, monitoring plant and animal species, and doing patrols and bird counts. In addition, you will ensure that invasive plant species do not spread in the nature reserve and push back the native vegetation.
The NGO is also committed to stimulating the interest of children and young people from the area in environmental protection and nature conservation. School groups are regularly visiting the reserve to expand their knowledge of nature and the environment in a playful and creative way. Topics and activities include kayaking, clean-ups and recycling, planting fynbos (a native plant species) and vegetable gardens, providing information about the reserve and its wildlife, about water safety, and doing hikes in the surrounding mountains.
Volunteers can also support the team with administrative tasks.
The position is unpaid, but it offers you unique experiences for your personal and professional future.
