You have the opportunity to work in Dr. Mnyoni's private veterinary practice in Moshi. You'll be part of a team of experienced and young veterinarians. Typically, you'll spend about half your time on assignments on farms and pastures throughout the Kilimanjaro region, usually from 8 AM to 5 PM. There, you'll help with the diagnosis and treatment of livestock such as cattle, pigs, chickens, goats, donkeys, and poultry. Inseminations and vaccinations are also carried out, and you can often lend a hand yourself.
The other half of your time will be spent in the practice. There, pets like dogs and cats are treated, minor surgeries are performed, as well as post-mortem diagnoses, castrations, medication sales, and laboratory activities. The practice also has a small shop for pet supplies. Local farmers mostly rely on the veterinarians; traditional medicine often no longer plays a role. Wild animals are not treated, as this falls under the responsibility of the national park administrations.
Common diseases in poultry often include fowl typhoid, Newcastle disease, or coccidiosis. In cattle, heartwater, anaplasmosis, or East Coast fever typically occur. Pigs can often suffer from swine erysipelas or swine fever. Dogs mostly suffer from parvovirus, distemper, or leptospirosis, while cats often have worm infections or feline rhinotracheitis. In general, all animals can also suffer from dehydration, poisoning, or strangulation. While the young veterinarians usually handle the outdoor assignments, Dr. Mnyoni spends more time in the practice and also manages the trade of pet food, pet supplies, and veterinary medicine.
Please note that this is a non-paid position; however, it offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience for your professional and personal future.
