Animal Welfare Project in the Dominican Republic

Pays d’action: République dominicaine, Amérique latine et Caraïbes
Type d’activité: Missions avec animaux et vétérinaires
Experience the flair of the Caribbean while making an important contribution to animal welfare on site. In addition to stray dogs, many horses, mules, and cats are often neglected and left to fend for themselves. This project cares for the animals, nurses them back to health, and ensures they receive love and attention — with the ultimate goal of finding them a new, loving home.

Your Placement:
This project is entirely run and financed by volunteers. Paid local staff are available for onboarding and coordination, which also helps create jobs in the community. The non-profit organization behind the local initiatives was founded in 2016 and is committed to a wide range of meaningful programs.

Your Tasks:
To ensure the animals receive the best possible care and have a chance at being rehomed, a variety of tasks need to be handled. Based on your previous experience and comfort level, you will coordinate your work schedule with the team on site and help shape your own responsibilities. If you already have experience in animal care or veterinary medicine, you may be given more advanced responsibilities more quickly. However, prior experience is not required — a heart for animals is more than enough.

The main duties include caring for and feeding the animals, cleaning sleeping and living areas, taking the animals for walks, playtime, and of course, plenty of cuddles. Depending on your experience, you may also assist with medical treatments and support local veterinarians.

You might also be assigned some administrative tasks, such as registering new patients or assisting with organizational processes.

Part of your responsibility is also to raise awareness about the project and animal rights to help sensitize the local community to these issues. This is essential to sustainably improve the living conditions of animals.

Your working hours are usually Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Your free time
The Caribbean – palm-fringed beaches, crystal-clear water and authentic flair. In addition to relaxing days on the beach, extraordinary highlights such as the El Limón waterfall, whale watching and excursions into the jungle of the Los Haitises National Park await you.
