Volunteer with wolves in Portugal

Pays d’action: Portugal, Europe
Type d’activité: Missions avec animaux et vétérinaires, Ecovolontariat
Wolves are in severe danger of excinction in Portugal. Their main threat is us - they have been hunted drastically and kept in zoos in awful conditions. Join a wolf sanctuary located in a National Park just outside Lisbon, where you will work with rescued wolves to give them a life as close to the wild as possible.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

Project description

The wolf sanctuary is currently home to a 15 or so Iberian wolves, rescued mainly from cruel captivity in zoos. The wolves now roam freely in their large enclosures, but your help is needed to care for this endangered species.

Volunteer tasks

  • Work closely with these shy and elusive creatures
  • Monitor the wolf behaviour to enable the best care possible
  • Help to remove alien vegetation from around the sanctuary
  • Plant native species within the sanctuary
  • Prepare food for the wolves
  • Feed and water the wolves - an amazing opportunity to see them!

Accommodation and food

You will be living on site at the wolf sanctuary, about 40 minutes from Lisbon. You will be sharing accommodation with other volunteers in a charming log cabin. There is a fully equipped kitchen, a lovely living cum dining room and two bedrooms. You will be taken into town every week to purchase food.

Arrival and orientation

You will arrive into Lisbon on a Sunday. Your first two nights in Portugal will be spent in a guest house in Lisbon for an orientation and city tour. On Tuesday you will be taken up to the sanctuary, introduced to the staff and given a project induction. The volunteer project then starts for real!

Free time
You will be working at the sanctuary Monday - Friday. You will have weekends free to explore the local area including the beaches, Lisbon, Porto, Sintra and more.
