Support & Care for Dogs in Sacred Valley

Pays d’action: Pérou, Amérique latine et Caraïbes
Type d’activité: Missions avec animaux et vétérinaires
Support rescued dogs in Cusco by providing daily care, improving wellbeing, and helping with long-term adoption at a local shelter.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

Cusco faces a serious challenge with abandoned and mistreated street dogs. Many suffer from malnutrition, untreated medical conditions, and lack of socialization. Limited access to sterilization and veterinary care contributes to the growing stray population.

This program responds through rescue, rehabilitation, daily care, sterilization support, and community education. By improving animal welfare and promoting responsible pet ownership, the shelter supports long-term social and environmental change in the region.

The Dog Shelter is run by a dedicated Peruvian couple who have spent years rescuing and rehabilitating dogs. The shelter currently cares for over 125 dogs, including puppies, adults, seniors, and animals recovering from abuse, neglect, or injury.

Volunteers play a key role in daily operations, helping ensure each dog receives proper care, nutrition, hygiene, and social interaction. Typical tasks include walking and exercising dogs, feeding and refilling water, cleaning kennels and common areas, providing affection and enrichment, and supporting basic training and adoption preparation.

This program is ideal for animal lovers comfortable with physical work who want to make a direct impact on animal wellbeing.

Volunteers work at shelter facilities in the Cusco region in a semi-urban, community-based environment that offers an authentic local experience.

Accommodation depends on the volunteer package. Housing is usually shared with other volunteers and includes basic amenities such as kitchen access, bathrooms, and common living areas. Living conditions are simple, safe, and comfortable.

Volunteers work alongside the shelter owners, local caretakers, and other international volunteers in a collaborative, supportive environment focused on teamwork and learning.

Volunteers are expected to respect animals, staff, and local culture; be reliable and punctual; feel emotionally prepared to work with rescued animals; follow hygiene and safety guidelines; and be comfortable working outdoors.

In return, volunteers receive orientation, task guidance, ongoing staff support, meaningful hands-on animal welfare experience, and opportunities for cultural exchange.

Volunteers should bring comfortable outdoor work clothes, closed shoes, sunscreen, a hat, a reusable water bottle, and any personal medication. No specialized equipment is required.
