As a volunteer, you will support the Conservation Center. Among other things, the center collects fecal samples from gorillas and livestock in surrounding villages and tests them for diseases. In addition, the team provides basic veterinary services in the communities, such as treating farm animals and administering vaccinations and spaying/neutering procedures for dogs and cats. So, you won’t be working directly with gorillas in the sense of close contact, but rather assisting in a project focused on conservation, monitoring, and preventive healthcare.
Your workday begins in the morning after breakfast. You then start with the tasks at hand for the project. There is a break at lunchtime before work continues in the afternoon. The regular workday ends around 4 p.m., and a short briefing on the next day’s activities often follows in the early evening. Since tasks depend on local needs, your daily routine may vary.
In your free time, you can explore Uganda’s stunning natural landscapes. In addition to the national park at your assignment location, there are other protected areas perfect for day trips. A weekend trip to Lake Victoria is also possible. This makes the project particularly exciting for anyone who wants to experience nature conservation firsthand while getting to know an East African country in depth.
