Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

The Project

Namibia's wild desert elephants are facing extinction. Decades of poaching and habitat pressure have reduced their numbers to just two locations worldwide. This grassroots project works with a local NGO to protect these majestic animals and aid local farmers in coexisting sustainably.

What is this project about?

In harsh desert conditions, both humans and elephants compete for essential water and food. Volunteers help build protective walls around water sources to safeguard farms while preserving wildlife access. Tracking elephant herds through the desert provides vital data on their movements and identifies areas of potential conflict.

What will I be doing?

  • Week 1: Construct walls to protect farmers' water points—ensuring elephants drink safely without destroying infrastructure.
  • Week 2: Track elephants in the wild—log movements, identify individuals, and record behavioral data while collaborating with locals.
  • Extended stays: Alternate building and tracking in two-week blocks for any stay longer than two weeks.

  • Camp beneath Namibia’s vast, star-filled skies
