Volunteer with sun bears in Borneo

Pays d’action: Malaisie, Asie
Type d’activité: Missions avec animaux et vétérinaires, Ecovolontariat
Volunteer with sun bears in Borneo, helping these rescued creatures to live a life as close to the wild as possible. Help with feeding, research, enrichment and education at this inspiring haven for mistreated animals, all whilst living in a little pocket of paradise.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

Sun bears are tragically faced with extinction. All of the sun bears which are currently at the rescue centre were taken illegally from the wild as babies to become domestic pets, or have been illegally trafficked. As they grew older and more wild, they were badly treated before being rescued. They are now living life as close to that in the wild as possible, and with your help may even be rehabilitated back to the wild.

The volunteer role
Volunteers work alongside full time staff to assist with:

  • food preparation
  • feeding the animals
  • creating enrichments
  • cleaning of enclosures
  • basic building work
  • helping with educational projects

This is a fantastic opportunity for those wanting to get stuck in to conservation and animal welfare. You live in a beautiful area with other like-minded volunteers and can explore the best of Borneo in your time off.

Animal welfare in Borneo
It is important that you are aware that the concept of animal welfare is an emerging one in many Asian countries. Often animal keepers are untrained, and their knowledge extends to making sure that the animals have food and water. The purpose of this volunteer project is to support the centre by bringing in new initiatives such as enrichments, shade, constructions and more to give the animals an environment as close to the wild as possible. You should be prepared to see plenty of areas for improvement in the centre - and this is why volunteers are so important.

Accommodation
Volunteers are accommodated cabins at the centre - surrounded by the noises of the jungle. A well equipped kitchen is provided where volunteers will do their own cooking. Bathrooms have western toilets and cold showers. This is basic jungle living, but it is all part of the experience. There is no wifi.

Free time
Volunteers can enjoy each weekend off. Most people choose to head into Kuching, to the local National Park or simply relax at the beach. Whatever you choose to do, you are in a stunning part of the world and there is so much to enjoy.
