Volunteer with sun bears and orangutans in Borneo

Pays d’action: Malaisie, Asie
Type d’activité: Missions avec animaux et vétérinaires, Ecovolontariat
Volunteer with sun bears and orangutans in Borneo, helping these rescued creatures to live a life as close to the wild as possible. Help with feeding, enrichment and education at this inspiring haven for mistreated animals, all whilst living in a little pocket of paradise.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

Sun bears and orangutans are tragically faced with extinction. All of the sun bears and orangutans which are currently at the rescue centre were taken illegally from the wild as babies to become domestic pets, or have been illegally trafficked. As they grew older and more wild, they were chained and beaten before being rescued. They are now living life as close to that in the wild as possible, and with your help may even be rehabilitated back to the wild.

This rescue centre is the only centre in Borneo which accepts all animals. Whilst the majority of animals are orangutans and sun bears, there are also growing numbers of other primates, binturongs, pangolins, crocs and more. This really is a wildlife lovers' paradise.

The volunteer role
Volunteers work alongside full time staff to assist with:

  • food preparation
  • feeding the animals
  • creating enrichments
  • cleaning of enclosures
  • basic building work
  • helping with educational projects

This is a fantastic opportunity for those wanting to get stuck in to conservation and animal welfare. You live in a beautiful area with other like-minded volunteers and can explore the best of Borneo in your time off.

Animal welfare in Borneo
It is important that you are aware that the concept of animal welfare is an emerging one in many Asian countries. Often animal keepers are untrained, and their knowledge extends to making sure that the animals have food and water. The purpose of this volunteer project is to support the centre by bringing in new initiatives such as enrichments, shade, constructions and more to give the animals an environment as close to the wild as possible. You should be prepared to see plenty of areas for improvement in the centre - and this is why volunteers are so important.

Accommodation
Volunteers are accommodated cabins at the centre - surrounded by the noises of the jungle. A well equipped kitchen is provided where volunteers will do their own cooking. Bathrooms have western toilets and cold showers. This is basic jungle living, but it is all part of the experience. There is no wifi.

Free time
Volunteers can enjoy each weekend off. Most people choose to head into Kuching, to the local National Park or simply relax at the beach. Whatever you choose to do, you are in a stunning part of the world and there is so much to enjoy.

L’organisation de volontariat se présente

This organisation specialises in arranging hand-picked ethical volunteering projects in 18 countries around the world. Projects mainly focus on animal welfare, conservation, and sustainability, with strong focus also on humanitarian and social care programmes. Their passionate and experienced team of travellers have been sending volunteers around the world since 2006.

We are able to accept bookings for all projects currently, however the situation is still evolving regarding whether participants can travel. As soon as travel restrictions are lifted and the safety of travel has been scrutinised, volunteers will be able to travel once more. This will vary on a country to country basis.

We are offering free trip changes, free date changes and also free unspecified date changes. This gives travellers maximum flexibility, whilst also giving them something to look forward to once this is over.

If participants cannot travel, their money is financially protected by ATOL or IPP. The money paid can be used towards any of our other trips within 18 months.
