Urban farming brings agriculture into cities, transforming urban spaces into green gardens and thus promoting food security. This approach is essential for greening inner cities, reducing emissions, and reconnecting people with nature. The topic also encompasses entire urban food systems – from production to consumption, including initiatives to improve access to fresh food and strengthen local markets.
In Cape Town, you can actively contribute to making these systems more sustainable and strengthening communities through internships and volunteering. You will gain practical experience and make a positive contribution.
Typically, you will work directly in urban gardens, growing fresh vegetables and fruits and applying sustainable concepts such as composting or organic farming. You will deal with various people and roles to jointly find solutions against food insecurity. You will also participate in workshops and events on farming, food security, and environmental protection.
In Cape Town, there are diverse organizations active in urban farming: everything from supporting communities through infrastructure and market access, to fostering young leaders and social projects on organic farms, to established urban farms with educational programs and well-known farmers' markets is available.
The position is non-paid, but offers you the chance to gain valuable experience in a forward-looking field and make a real difference for people and the environment.
