Football is a national sport in Ghana, and the national team plays at the World Cup level. Enthusiasm for the sport runs high, and it is genuinely played everywhere - at school, at local clubs, out on the street! As well as the obvious health benefits such as increasing physical fitness, the sport also promotes positive social skills and teamwork within the community.
Volunteering as a coach in Ghana would enable you to pass on valuable skills to the younger generations and become part of an amazing community.
Volunteers are based in Accra, working at the local football club which was founded in 1998. The club has evolved over the years and has teams across several tiers. They have had a very successful evolution, growing from an amateur team to a progressional football club. Their main goal now is to reach the main national league. The club is home to both a junior and senior team, who train on different fields around ten minutes apart. From our shared volunteer house or your host family, you can easily reach the training ground by public transport or taxi.
As a volunteer, you'll assist the coaches on site. This could include training the players in groups according to their skill level, leading warm-up exercises, working on strength and endurance techniques and guiding your players through specific exercises designed to improve their match techniques. If you volunteer during low season you will also be responsible for recruiting new talent. The club puts on dedicated training days in order to find the best local talent, to help the team keep climbing the ranks to the highest national league. Once you arrive on site, you’ll organise your exact working hours. Typically you will work for three to five hours a day, five days a week. Matches are usually held on the weekend so you may, at times, have to work a weekend and swap your days off for ones in the week. The teams practice every day except match day, and you’ll usually have the day off after an important game. The senior team trains in the morning and juniors train in the afternoon. During the off-season when there are no league games, you’ll spend your time recruiting for the club.
