Coach Sports and Teach English to refugee children from war-torn countries such as the Sudan, Somalia and Afghanistan and assist them to begin a new life in safety. The majority of the schools we work with are Intensive English Centers, where you'll be able to coach and teach at the same time, thus helping them to adjust and settle into their new home country.
Your day will usually be made up of a mixture of teaching (English) and sports coaching.
You'll work closely as an assistant teacher with the students and have the opportunity for one-to-one classes, to help them as much as possible, as many of the children’s English is very poor, and this is where YOU will make a great difference.
Class sizes vary between 10 and 15 children in each class, with most students being 4 to 12 years old.
The school day starts at around 8:45 am to 2:45 pm, with each lesson being 40 minutes, allowing for approx 4-5 hours of preparing for lessons and teaching.
The schools employ a number of teachers to work in the Center, who speak the children's native language as this helps tremendously when they start to learn English.
As well as teaching English, you'll be able to get involved in a number of other subjects within the IEC Center, such as:
You will work as assistance to the Sports teacher, as the children are still very young, sport is a part time activity, and changes depending on the season, allowing you the opportunity to encourage and gain practice in many different elements of teaching.
