Whether you work in a psychiatric institution or the center for disabled children and teenagers, you will find the volunteering experience in Bolivia gratifying!
The center for disabled children and teenagers, is a nonprofit organization and helps both the children and their families, especially their mothers if they are living alone. Most children who come to take parte of rehabilitation therapy are from the rural areas around Sucre. The aim of the doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists who take care of the children is to support their patients, always being compassionate, understanding, and friendly and having a big smile. In this institution, physiotherapists are desperately needed!
The consists of five different areas: A boarding school, the units of occupational therapy and patients mobility, a daycare area and an inclusive school project. Volunteers are welcome and needed to help in all areas.
For those who are interested in medicine, working at the psychiatric clinic is an excellent opportunity. Currently there are 400 patients (numbers subject to change) as well as a team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists, and Bolivian medical students. In the psychiatric clinic there are also many elderly people who need help moving around in their wheelchairs, reading newspapers, washing, and eating.
All these institutions are placed in and around Sucre, a city which is located in the southern part of Bolivia at an average elevation of 2,750 meters above sea level. Sucre is Bolivia's capital city, even tough the government is located in La Paz. Sucre is famous for its cultural richness which is especially highlighted by its colonial architecture.
In this volunteer program you will find yourself working with handicapped children, people with medical conditions, or with children that lack the care and attention of their families. You will have the opportunity to either work in a center for disabled children and teenagers or in a psychiatric institution. It's up to you to decide which of these programs best matches your interests for a work abroad in Bolivia!
