Based in the villages around Tha Ton and Mae Ai in Northern Thailand you will have the opportunity to live as a local on the school grounds or nearby and volunteer at the local primary school supporting the English department. English is important to the Thai people so they can work in the tourism industry and really need help with pronunciation and conversational English. You can volunteer for any length of time as an individual or with a group of your friends.
In your free time you will have the chance to make friends with other teachers and local villagers as well as interacting with the children, playing games and sports. There will be opportunities for other activities with the children such as music, art, drama, or even run a school magazine or a talent show! You can choose to run lessons or small sessions on your own or with your volunteer partner. If you would prefer to work on a one to one basis with children so you can focus your attention on those that need that extra bit of help, that be arranged. You tell us what areas you would like to help with and we will make it happen.
The more you put into community life and getting to know the locals, the more you will understand about this amazing country. You will have the opportunity to build skills and in particular skills that can be transferred to the workplace, for example thinking on your feet, dealing with pressure, problem-solving, overcoming challenges, independence, responsibility and many more.
Spare time is spent preparing your lessons with your volunteer partner, marking books, or with the other volunteers and your new friends (neighbours and teachers). We encourage volunteers to get to know the locals – the teachers could even invite you to dinner.
The volunteer project is followed by an optional 4 week period of independent group travel in Thailand, including 24/7 back up from our local representatives.
