Set in the town and surrounding villages of Syangja, you will have the chance to teach English in pairs, or on your own, at a rural government school or a school for the children of ex-Gurkha servicemen. Walking to school each day you will be greeted by your pupils saying ‘Namaste’, the traditional Nepalese greeting. Free time in school is spent lesson planning and marking books. There is also time for sports, as well as art and music for those who are keen on extra-curricular activities. The more you put in, the more you will get out of your project.
The more you put into community life and getting to know the locals, the more you will understand about this amazing country. You will have the opportunity to build skills and in particular skills that can be transferred to the workplace, for example thinking on your feet, dealing with pressure, problem-solving, overcoming challenges, independence, responsibility and many more.
Spare time is spent preparing your lessons with your volunteer partner, marking books, or with the other volunteers and your new friends (neighbours and teachers). We encourage volunteers to get to know the locals – the teachers could even invite you to dinner.
The teaching project is followed by an optional 4 week period of independent group travel in Nepal and India all with 24-hour support from our local representative.
