Teach English in Chile and learn Spanish

Pays d’action: Chili, Amérique latine et Caraïbes
Type d’activité: Enseignement
Volunteer as an English teacher in stunning Chile, while living with a friendly local family and improving your Spanish. Rafting, riding, hiking and glacier walking are all close by.

Description du projet et du rôle des volontaires

Our programme is based in southern Patagonia in a small city called Coyhaique. This is about as far south as you can go on the continent South American continent. Your role as a volunteer is assist in the teaching of English, either in a primary or secondary school. You’ll act as a role model for the children and inspire them to improve their English.

Teaching English in Chile
The schools we work with have experience of dealing with our volunteers over many years. They are prepared for your arrival and know exactly how to get the best out of you in the classroom. Bear in mind that you are still going to a developing country so things may not always be as organised as you are used to at home but being adaptable is one of those vital skills that a gap year or career break will teach you about.

You will assist teachers in the morning (Monday-Friday) with an option to continue teaching into the afternoon, coach sports or enjoy the surroundings and work on your Spanish.

Most volunteers are working as assistants in the classroom. If you have appropriate previous experience, there is the option to take your own classes.

Sports coaching
If you keen on playing sport, there is also an option to coach your favourite sport to children in Chile, mainly as an extra-curricular, after school, activity.

Living with a host family
Each volunteer stays with their own carefully selected family, who will include you in family life, but also give you the freedom to have a life of your own in this lively town. Volunteers are located close by and the social life is good.
Living with a Chilean family is a great opportunity to live as locals do and enjoy the food and culture.

Arrival orientation
One of the highlights of the programme is the highly rated cultural orientation at the start. This is designed to give volunteers a chance to get to know each other and their new community. Activities included during this time include cooking classes, cycling tour, visit to the local university and a welcome BBQ.

Speaking Spanish
Volunteers get the most out of this project if they can already speak the basics of Spanish. There isn’t a great deal of English spoken in the area. If you are not sure whether your Spanish is up to the right level, get in touch and we can discuss.

We provide weekly conversational Spanish classes during your time in Chile. These are designed to help you improve, rather than learn, Spanish.
