In the Indonesian province Central Kalimantan, in the southern part of Borneo, you can find the Sabangau forest, a large area of tropical peat-swamp forest. This forest is home to a variety of rare animal and plant species, such as the Bornean Orangutan and the Bornean White-Bearded Gibbon. This project aims to maintain the original flora and fauna of the forest as a habitat for endangered species through different monitoring and renaturation activities. During the project experienced conservationist will show you how to apply various methods to protect the local wildlife; and also interacting with the local people will be part of your schedule.

Project details
During the project you will be living in a research camp in the Sabangau Forest with other volunteers. The camp consists of several dormitory huts, shared sanitary facilities, a kitchen and an office.
At the beginning of the project you will arrive at the airport Tjilik Riwut in the city of Palangka Raya, where a staff member will pick you up. You will spend the first two nights in a hostel in the city. On your third day you will head towards your research camp. After your arrival you will meet the rest of the team; and during an introduction meeting you will receive valuable information about safety regulations for working and living in the jungle. During your time in the project you and the rest of the group will get deeper and deeper into the Sabangau Forest, whilst working on different wildlife and habitat monitoring methods under the instructions of experienced conservationists. You will also play an active part in conserving the original state of the forest as a retreat for endangered wildlife. Specific tasks during this species conservation programme include the research of local primate populations and their behaviour, the monitoring of different insect species as well as data collection by using camera traps. Moreover, you will get to know special techniques which are applied to strengthen the peat-swamp forests and used in nature conservation projects. The team will also visit local schools to share their knowledge about environmental conservation with the community. From time to time you will also help maintenance work at the camp. The highlight of your adventure is a one-week expedition to a camp which is located in a more central region of the jungle, where you will deepen your rainforest knowledge through intensive research activities.
