Volunteers help to renovate a house in Portugal
Sadly, many people who are living below the poverty line in Portugal are financially unable to maintain their homes. Issues such as unemployment, disability and old age mean that for many, they are simply not able to create the basic living conditions that they need for a healthy and safe lifestyle. Join a charity that helps people to have a clean, safe and warm home, achieved through basic DIY and renovations.
Volunteers join the charity team, lead by an experienced builder, going into people's houses to give them the helping hand that they need. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet local people, and see their joy as their house becomes a home.
Volunteer tasks can include, but are not limited to:
- Help with stripping the walls and preparing them for painting
- Paint both interior and exterior walls
- Tile the floors and walls
- Fit showers or kitchen units
- Help with general DIY around the home
- Mix concrete and lay bricks
Full instruction is given throughout, so you do not need any prior experience. You will learn on the job. You will volunteer for about 4 hours per day, 5 days per week.
- Learn useful DIY skills, and use them to do something good
- Improve the lives of people who are living below the poverty line in Portugal
- Live in the buzzing city of Lisbon - enjoy stunning beaches, great food, amazing wine, ancient monasteries and city life
You will be working on the project Monday - Friday, either on a morning or afternoon shift. This working pattern means that you have plenty of time to improve your Portuguese, explore the local area and get to know your fellow volunteers. You will have weekends free to explore the local area including the beaches, Lisbon, Porto, Sintra and more.
Accommodation and food
You will be living in possibly the most eco-friendly guest house in Lisbon. The accommodation is just 30 minutes from the city centre, in a quiet residential area. You will be sharing accommodation with other volunteers. There is a large patio, wifi, games, lounge area and yoga classes at the accommodation.
Important things to know about the accommodation are:
- Every effort is taken to avoid single use plastic - ranging from food packaging to toiletries packaging
- Any plastic that cannot be avoided is shredded and then reused
- Three yummy meals are served each day. Any food that is wasted will either be composted or be donated to the homeless

and also free unspecified date changes
. This gives travellers maximum flexibility, whilst also giving them something to look forward to once this is over.
If participants cannot travel, their money is financially protected by ATOL or IPP. The money paid can be used towards any
of our other trips within 18 months.
Fully refundable deposit and no further payment due until 21 days before departure. Free trip date and destination changes until 28 days before departure.
