As a volunteer in this three-week project you'll be working and living in a camp amidst Kafue National Park to support the experienced conservation team on site. You will help release orphaned elephants back into the wild by monitoring the animals, tracking wildlife and collecting data. At the same time, you get the chance to witness the country's incredible biodiversity.
After your arrival in Zambia, you will spend your first project day in the project’s Elephant Nursery close to Zambia’s capital Lusaka. Here you can gain an overview of the project, of your future volunteer tasks and may already support the team on-site with smaller chores. The next day you will be transferred to Kafue National Park.
Here, a typical day usually starts at 06:00 AM and ends around 06:00 PM. Researching the elephants and other wildlife in the area will be in the centre of your involvement as a volunteer. You will dedicate yourself to monitoring elephant orphans in the park that are equipped with collars, to researching their feeding behaviour, to creating a database on the local elephant population and to tracking other wild animals using different research methods. Working together with local communities and implementing certain strategies to help mitigate human-wildlife-conflict will also be part of your volunteer tasks.
Note: Due to several factors, your daily schedule is always subject to fluctuations and cannot be 100% predicted. Furthermore, the project follows a hands-off policy – this means that volunteers are not allowed to touch the elephants.
