Its fertile vegetation and its rich biodiversity make Guatemala so special in the heart of Central America. The sea waters on the Pacific coast of the country are not only the home of many species of fish, but also a nesting site for the huge marine turtles threatened with extinction. Each year they come back to the same beaches to lay eggs. However, harsh conditions complicate the survival of the population. Among the natives, the tortoises are regarded as delicacies - many nests are plundered before the descendants can hatch. And also the hatched, hardly child-sized turtles have to face already life-threatening challenges. Natural enemies like hungry seabirds or the drying heat of the sun make it difficult for the newborn to enter the sea. Numerous baby turtles are already dying on the first steps of their lives.
For the protection of the sea turtles and the conservation of biodiversity in Guatemala, various aid projects have been launched, where your help is most welcome.
In collaboration with marine biologists and project participants, you are dedicated to the protection of sea turtles and the survival of their offspring. In the case of nocturnal inspections on the beaches, you observe the turtles at the oviposition and make sure that they are not disturbed. Your tasks include the surveying of the animals as well as the marking and protection of the nests. You collect data on the number, size and quality of the eggs and compare the values with the data of the past years. Some eggs are taken from the nests and kept under observation in the breeding station until the small hatches come. Under secured conditions, you will be able to release them into the open in a safe place.
