The animal sanctuary is a privately owned animal welfare center focused on the care, rehabilitation and shelter of wildlife in Costa Rica. In direct cooperation with the government, the center receives customs confiscated, ill and injured wildlife. Many of these animals were kept as pets or were destined for illegal trafficking. The animals that come to the rescue center receive medical care and the care they desperately need. Many of the animals can not be reintroduced into the wild due to the permanent damage or they experienced during captivity in human hands. They have to spend their remaining lives in the animal protection center and there they fulfill after all the important task to make visitors and volunteers aware of the need for animal welfare and the preservation of biodiversity.
An average week for a volunteer is to feed the animals daily and clean their cages. There are also observation and enrichment projects where volunteers can observe animals. As a volunteer, you should have a genuine desire to become involved in animal welfare, because your mission is to understand and improve the situation of the animals, as you are responsible for the well-being and daily care of these animals. You are not only involved in daily feeding and cleaning tasks, but also in construction and maintenance work aimed at improving their living conditions.
