This project is located on very fertile land due to its past volcanic activities. There are plenty of volcanoes that surround this area, also known as the Lakes Province of Ecuador. The population that inhabits this region is 90% indigenous, whose main language is Kichwa; the second language spoken is Spanish.
The people of the region of Imbabura and Otavalo are very well known in South America, even on an international level, due to their traditional handicrafts and animal markets held every Saturday. This region’s market is the biggest indigenous public market in South America, and is the place where women from different communities sell their famous handicrafts. As a volunteer, you will live in one of these communities and help with the production of traditional Ecuadorian handicrafts and arts. In most of these communities, the families’ principal income relies on the women’s craftwork, as well as agricultural activities. Volunteers who are not necessarily adept at manual tasks will help on the local farms to support the agricultural production, which is used for personal consumption by the families, while the remaining stock is sold in local markets.
Tasks for volunteers:
• Livestock farming
• Plant care
• Preparation of craftsmanship with local women
• Tourist activities
