Many people in Myanmar live from agriculture. However, the year-long economic isolation of the country has meant that many agricultural techniques used are not up to date or even harmful to the environment. Tools such as fertilizer and equipment are often difficult to obtain and expensive, making it difficult for farmers to work efficiently. The rural population therefore often is facing a life in poverty.
Near Hwambi, about 2.5 hours north of Yangon, young rural farmers can learn about sustainable agricultural practices at the NEED eco training farm. The farm covers over 4 acres and is entirely powered by solar energy. Various types of fruits and vegetables are cultivated (for example watercress, aubergines, beans, basil, lemon grass, garlic, onions, bananas, ginger, mushrooms and chili) and rice is grown on an additional 20 hectares.
Teaching topics and trainings for the students include permaculture, environmental protection, ecologically sound farming practices and techniques, community development and resource management. The students can also learn basics in business, computers and English.
As a volunteer, if you have experience in the fields of agriculture, gardening or permaculture, you can teach your professional knowledge. Alternatively or additionally, you can also support the farm in marketing and social media. However, previous experience is not required. You can write reports on activities in English and support the farm in fundraising, networking and website updates.
Internships are also possible for those who would like to learn about sustainable organic agriculture. You will accompany and asssit with all activities on the farm.
If you are still looking for a topic for your university disseration, then you are right here, too! NEED gladly supports students in their scientific research on subject-specific topics.
